"The Game of Life and How
To Play it" by Florence Schovel Shinn
Most
of us have forgotten that "life is a game that can only
be played not won" as Bagger Vance said in the movie
of the same name.
He
Must have read Shinn's book! Here are a couple of paragraphs
from her opening chapter:
Most
people consider life a battle -- but it is not a battle, it
is a game.
It
is a game, however, which cannot be played successfully without
the knowledge of spiritual law.
The
imagination has been called, "The Scissors of The Mind,"
and it is ever cutting, cutting, day by day, the pictures
man sees there, and sooner or later he meets his own creations
in his outer world. To train the imagination successfully,
man must understand the workings of his mind. The Greeks said:
"Know Thyself."
There
are three departments of the mind, the subconscious, conscious
and superconscious. The subconscious, is simply power, without
direction. It is like steam or electricity, and it does what
it is directed to do; it has no power of induction.
Whatever
man feels deeply or images clearly, is impressed upon the
subconscious mind, and carried out in minutest detail.
Shinn
is one of what were called the "new thought movement"
from around the turn of the century and promotes the "Metaphysics"
of the bible as opposed to the religious dogma that most people
know it for today.
Here's
what you'll learn:
Chapter
1: The Game
Chapter 2: The Law of Prosperity
Chapter 3: The Power of the Word
Chapter 4: The Law of Nonresistance
Chapter 5: The Law of Karma and the Law of
Forgiveness
Chapter 6: Casting the Burden (Impressing
the Subconscious)
Chapter 7: Love
Chapter 8: Intuition or Guidance
Chapter 9: Perfect Self-Expression or The
Divine Design
Chapter 10: Denials and Affirmations

#13:
"The Secret Door to Success"
by Florence Schovel Shinn
Here
is another thought-provoking book from Shinn. She says:
A
successful man is always asked - "What is the secret
of your success?"
People
never ask a man who is a failure, "What is the secret
of your failure?"
It
is quite easy to see and they are not interested. People all
want to know how to open the secret door to success. For each
man there is success, but it seems to be behind a door or
wall.
This
book is packed with great success stories like this one:
A
number of years ago I went to California to speak at the different
centers, by way of the Panama Canal, and on the boat I met
a man named Jim Tully.
For
years he had been a tramp. He called himself “The King
of the Hoboes”.He was ambitious and picked up an education.
He had a vivid imagination and commenced writing stories about
his experiences.
He
dramatized tramp life, he enjoyed what he was doing, and became
a very successful author.
I
remember one book called "Outside Looking In." It
was made into a motion picture. He is now famous and prosperous
and lives in Hollywood.
What
opened the secret door to success for Jim Tully?
Read
this book.

"Character-Building
Thought Power"
by Ralph Waldo Trine
This
is a very short book, only 20 or so pages, but it is absolutely
packed with the wisdoms of success.
He
says:
Unconsciously
we are forming habits every moment of our lives.
Some
are habits of a desirable nature; some are those of a most
undesirable nature.
Some,
though not so bad in themselves, are exceedingly bad in their
cumulative effects, and cause us at times much loss, much
pain and anguish, while their opposites would, on the contrary,
bring as much peace and joy, as well as a continually increasing
power.
One
of the things I like about the old classics is the way that
the authors could pack such proufound truths into so few pages
and in ways that almost anyone can understand them.

#15:
"Attaining
Your Desires by letting your subconscious mind work for you"
by Genevieve Behrend
"I
would say this is the clearest, most comprehensive, most practical
and indeed most do-able explanation of how the Creative Process
works in real life that I've ever read."
-David Garfinkle
Behrend
wrote her book as a complete seven-lesson course.
The
writing is in dialogue form, between a "Sage" and
a "Pupil." The Sage is a famous author and teacher;
the Pupil is you. It is very easy reading, very tightly written,
and very enlightening. Here are a few of the lesson/chapter
titles:
Lesson
2: How to Get What You Want
Lesson 3. How to Overcome Adverse conditions Lesson 5. Making
Your Subjective Mind Work for you Lesson 7. Putting Your Lessons
Into Practice
Within
these lessons is pure compressed dynamite. I mean it.
Here
are a few sub-headings to give you a sense of the staggering
power of this rare material:
"The Secret of Controlling Your Life Forces"
"Don't Look for Coincidences In Your Life"
"How to Drive Anxiety Out of Your Mind"
"How You Can Control Circumstances"
"How Your Mind Is Related to The Universal Mind"
"How to Develop Health and Harmony"

"Above Life's Turmoil"
by James Allen
ames
Allen is one of those authors I find I can read again and
again and again and each time get so much out of his writings.
He
says:
To maintain an unchangeable sweetness of disposition, to think
only thoughts that are pure and gentle, and to be happy under
all circumstances,- such blessed conditions and such beauty
of character and life should be the aim of all, and particularly
so of those who wish to lessen the misery of the world.
Same
lesson, different author.
Control your thoughts and create you life.

#17:
"Byways
to Blessedness"
by James Allen
Along
the highways of Burma there is placed, at regular distances
away from the dust of the road, and under the cool shade of
a group of trees, a small wooden building called a "rest-house",
where the weary traveller may rest a while, and allay his
thirst and assuage his hunger and fatigue by partaking of
the food and water which the kindly inhabitants place there
as a religious duty.
Along
the great highway of life there are such resting places; away
from the heat of passion and the dust of disappointment, under
the cool and refreshing shade of lowly Wisdom, are the humble,
unimposing "rest-houses" of peace, and the little,
almost unnoticed, byways of blessedness, where alone the weary
and footsore can find strength and healing.
In
this book James shows you how taking the time to rest and
go within will help you to create what you want "without".

#18:
"Tao
Te Ching"
by Lao Tse
"The
Tao is one of the shortest books on philosopy of life ever
written "
The
best thing is the Tao doesnt tell you what to do. There are
simply 80 or so small verses some no longer that a line or
two, which could get you thinking for years. The idea however
with the Tao is that you experience what they say as opposed
just intellectually understand it, which I would say is the
KEY to all personal development.
Have
a read of this, there is such beauty in it's simplicity and
truth.
